The story takes place in Vienna in 1938, when Austria is being occupied by the Nazi regime. The notary Josef Bartok and his wife Anna are arrested shortly before their planned escape and taken to Gestapo headquarters. There Bartok, who acts as asset manager for many aristocrats, is supposed to give Böhm, the head of the Gestapo, access to their accounts abroad. But the notary vehemently refuses to cooperate and is therefore placed in solitary confinement. For weeks and months, Bartok remains steadfast until he slowly comes to the brink of despair. By chance, however, shortly before the capitulation, his unexpected rescue falls into his hands – a book about chess.
In addition to the main actor, Oliver Masucci (“Enfant Terrible”, “Er ist wieder da”), the ensemble consists of Albrecht Schuch (“Berlin Alexanderplatz”, “System Crasher”), Birgit Minichmayr (“Everyone Else”) and Rolf Lassgård (“One Man named Ove”).
