Maximilian Schachmann lost his second place at the Tour de Suisse after a fall.
The German cycling champion from the Bora-hansgrohe team was involved in a mass crash about four kilometers before the finish of the third stage over 176.9 kilometers from Aesch to Grenchen and suffered minor injuries. Old champion Peter Sagan from Team TotalEnergies secured victory in the sprint ahead of Frenchman Bryan Coquard and Alexander Kristoff from Norway. It was the 18th victory in the Tour of Switzerland for the former world champion from Slovakia.
In the last intermediate sprint, Schachmann had secured a two-second time credit for second place behind Brit Geraint Thomas, thereby reducing his gap to first place overall Stephen Williams to two seconds. After his fall, the Berliner finished 71st, 53 seconds behind and fell back to 17th place in the overall standings.
The new second behind the Brit Williams is the Dane Andreas Kron (+6 seconds) in front of Thomas (+7). The fourth stage this Wednesday leads over 190.8 kilometers from Grenchen to Brunnen. The Tour de Suisse ends on Sunday with the individual time trial in Vaduz.
