Scammers now appear in online marketplaces as buyers

A fraudster acting as a buyer tries to buy merchandise with a false courier service.

The marketplace is, for example, Tori.fi or Facebook’s sales and purchasing groups. Inka Soveri

Several reports of crimes have been made to the police at online marketplaces.

The seller has left their number in the notice and is typically contacted through WhatsApp.

The latest twist in scams is that the seller of the product becomes deceived by the buyer.

The scammer claims the service works by having a courier pick up the product from the seller’s home. The buyer offers to pay the shipping costs through the courier service and provides the seller with a link to a genuine-looking service.

For example, a website that opens via a link may have a genuine Post logo.

The service is requesting card information

The service that opens via the link requests information in order to access the service. The site will ask you to enter your debit or debit card information into the system. This is a scam after which criminals are able to debit money from an account or card.

After receiving the bank card information, the “buyer” is no longer available. Money is usually not refundable.

The Inland Finland Police informs about this.

REMEMBER

Do not share your bank details or other personal information online with anyone.

Do not open suspicious links.

A genuine shipping service will not ask for your bank details.

A Finnish telephone number does not guarantee that the buyer is in Finland.

If the price or course of action offered by the buyer feels too good to be true, it is probably not true.
