SC Magdeburg and THW Kiel start confidently

The German handball champion SC Magdeburg didn’t show any weaknesses at the start of the new Bundesliga season – and the hunters also got off to a successful start.

The SCM defeated newly promoted ASV Hamm-Westfalen with 31:23 (16:11). Record champion THW Kiel won against TVB Stuttgart 36:23 (17:11) and thus took the lead in the table.

“It was good that we won, two points are simply important at the beginning of the season,” said Magdeburg international Philipp Weber. “But we still have to consolidate in many areas.” On Wednesday, coach Bennet Wiegert’s team lost in the Supercup against the cup winners and Kiel (33:36).

After the guests from Hamm got into the game surprisingly well and were temporarily leading 6:4, Magdeburg increasingly took control towards the end of the first half. In the second half, the outsider couldn’t get any closer.

The best scorers at SCM were last season’s top scorer, Omar Ingi Magnusson, with eight goals, and Weber, who scored five times. Fabian Huesmann (ten goals) convinced at Hamm-Westphalia.

Summer signing Eric Johansson scored the most in Kiel. The 22-year-old Swede scored six goals. In the 34:27 (17:13) of Füchse Berlin against Frisch Auf Göppingen, Hans Lindberg towered over with twelve goals.
