After the nerve-wracking playoff game, Bundesliga soccer team SC Freiburg continues in the Europa League in the round of 16. The opponent, like in the group phase: West Ham United. There is good news for the fans in advance.
The round of 16 first leg (March 7th, 9:00 p.m.) between SC Freiburg and West Ham United will be shown live and exclusively on free TV on RTL.
Presenter Laura Papendick will report live from the Europa Park Stadium together with expert Lothar Matthäus from 8:45 p.m. The top game will be commented on by Marco Hagemann and Steffen Freund.
Christian Streich’s team can take revenge against the “Hammers”. Both duels in the group phase of the current Europa League season went to the English team. In Freiburg the sports club lost 1:2 (0:1), in London it suffered a deserved 0:2 defeat. The Bundesliga club ultimately finished the group in second place behind West Ham – and therefore had to take the detour via the playoffs in order to qualify for the round of 16.
After a 0-0 draw in the first leg against French runners-up RC Lens, it initially looked clear that they would be eliminated from the Europa League in the second leg. But after a 0-2 break, Freiburg came back and forced extra time. Attacker Michael Gregoritsch scored the winning goal there.
Bayer Leverkusen has to survive against Qarabag
All other top pairings in the round of 16 of the Europa League will now be shown on RTL+.
Bundesliga table leaders Bayer Leverkusen play at Qarabag FK at 6:45 p.m., co-favorites FC Liverpool are away at Sparta Prague. AS Roma welcomes English club Brighton & Hove Albion, SL Benfica meets Rangers from Glasgow. And Serie A top club AC Milan is fighting for a good starting position for a place in the quarter-finals in the home game against Slavia Prague.
