SC Freiburg | Streich before Bayern duel: “Have nothing to give away”

Coach Christian Streich from SC Freiburg firmly believes in a cup surprise at industry leader Bayern Munich. “We have nothing to lose, but nothing to give away either,” said the 57-year-old before the quarter-finals on Tuesday (8:45 p.m. / Sky and ARD): “We’re going there to get to the semi-finals and we have to beat Bayern for that . We’re all really looking forward to the game.”

So far, Streich has never won in Munich in his eleven-year tenure. “We’ll try again. Such negative statistics give you the motivation to create something very special. We’re highly motivated,” emphasized the longest-serving coach in the Bundesliga. A game against Bayern is also decided in the head, it needs an “incredibly high frustration tolerance”.

“The Bayern jersey that’s running towards you isn’t always faster than the Leverkusen or Dortmund jersey,” explained Streich. “But it’s a psychological thing not to be fooled.”

SC needs “everything at 100 percent” against FC Bayern

Central defender Philipp Lienhart will also be absent due to bleeding in his thigh, while right-back Lukas Kübler could return to the squad after suffering an infection.

“We need everything at 100 percent,” said Streich. “If everything is going well, we have an outstanding goalkeeper and an outstanding defensive performance, then you can sometimes create a sensation.” It also makes “no difference” whether Bayern Julian Nagelsmann or Thomas Tuchel is the coach.
