Freiburg’s “important building block”
According to coach Christian Streich, the fact that SC Freiburg is economically healthy is primarily due to the “good development” of many talents from their own football school. “Young players are fundamental to the philosophy of our club,” said the coach before the Europa League game against FK TSC Backa Topola on Thursday (9 p.m./RTL and RTL+).
“If we continue to succeed in bringing in young players who will then be at Bundesliga level, then that will be an important building block for the face of this club.” Just last weekend, Jordy Makengo (22), who came to SC from France in 2021 was celebrated his debut in the Bundesliga. Noah Weißhaupt (22) also scored his debut goal.
The winger came to Freiburg as a ten-year-old. “It is not a given that young players are integrated,” emphasized Streich. “There are different constellations. But it’s also the group as a whole that lets young players breathe. It’s excellent for us, it works for us – despite being consistent in our assessment of performance.”

SC Freiburg: Coach Streich points to the big task of changing the squad
It is a big task year after year, says Streich, to overcome upheavals. “We were then able to sell players who had developed well in order to also pay our employees. But it is not possible to finish fifth or sixth every year and at the same time integrate five or six young players. You have to understand that and our fans do that,” said the 58-year-old.
The most valuable Freiburg players are Philipp Lienhart (27), Matthias Ginter (29) and Ritsu Doan (25) with a market value of 20 million and 18 million euros respectively. With Kiliann Sildillia (21), there is currently a youngster in the squad who has exceeded the 10 million mark in market value. The Breisgauer’s most expensive departures so far have been Kevin Schade (21; for 25 million euros to Brentford) and Çağlar Söyüncü (22; for 21.1 million euros to Leicester City). The last time the SC recorded a transfer deficit was in the 2019/20 season, when there was no significant income from player sales. In the past four years – including 2023/24 – more has always been received than spent. When it comes to the average age (25.9), Freiburg is in the middle of the Bundesliga.
