SC Freiburg: Former professional Jonathan Schmid signs with Austria Lustenau

One year contract with option

As expected, Bundesliga side Austria Lustenau have signed Jonathan Schmid. The 33-year-old Frenchman was last employed by the German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg until the end of last season, but his contract in Breisgau was not extended. The Alsatian played a total of 299 games in the German Oberhaus, but he only played three times for Freiburg in the past season.

In Vorarlberg, the right-back, who was without a club and was able to change after the end of the transfer, signed a contract that would run until the end of the season with an option to extend it. Schmid’s brother Anthony, who is nine years his junior, has also been playing for Lustenau since 2022, with whom Jonathan will now be on the field together for the first time.

“We are very proud to have signed such an experienced player in Jonathan, who has shaped the German Bundesliga for more than ten years with his performance and character. At first glance, it may not be a classic ‘Austria-Lustenau transfer’ of a young, developing player, as has often happened in recent years due to our philosophy. So far this season our newcomers have had an average age of 20.9 and we believe it takes a certain level of experience and hierarchy with these players so that we can get the most out of the team’s great potential. We are sure that all of our young players can learn a lot from a personality like Jonathan, who has experienced almost every situation in football and he inspires our team with his undisputed footballing quality both on the pitch and in the dressing room will raise to a new level,” said sports coordinator Alexander Schneider.
