Röhl is also missing injured
Merlin Röhl has returned from the German U21 national team with an injury, exacerbating SC Freiburg’s already tense personnel situation. The recently in-form midfielder will “in all probability be out” due to a tissue injury in the Achilles tendon area, said SC coach Christian Streich before the Bundesliga game against SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday (3:30 p.m.). Winter transfers are therefore being discussed internally.
“The situation hasn’t gotten any better in the last few weeks,” the coach said on Thursday. In addition to Röhl, top performers such as captain Christian Günter and right-back Lukas Kübler are also missing – a total of eight players from the first team are missing. Since those responsible for many of them cannot estimate when they will be available again, something could happen in the winter transfer period.
“The scouting department is looking,” said Streich, who in recent years has rarely been able to welcome newcomers in January. A total of a single player arrived in the last four winter transfer periods – Hugo Siquet, who is currently on loan, cost 4.5 million euros in 2022 and only played four games for the sports club (among all SC winter transfers). “It’s about which players we say we would do and which club is willing to give away a good player. We have to weigh that up.”
