Savings are now also being made on the Christmas tree

In view of the increased cost of living, the horticultural association expects that people will also pay attention to the Christmas tree.

“We are observing that the trees are getting smaller,” said the managing director of the traditional Späth’sche Baumschulen in Berlin, Holger Zahn, on Saturday. The Berlin-Brandenburg Horticultural Association opened the Christmas tree season on its production areas in Königs Wusterhausen (Dahme-Spreewald district).

With an eye on their household budgets, people wanted to spend less money on the tree, said Zahn. Sales in the garden sector are currently declining significantly overall.

Small Christmas trees in pots are trendy

Many people turned to smaller trees in pots because they could plant them out again, as the association’s vice president, Lutz Grille, said. However, these trees with root balls should only be left in the warm apartment for a maximum of a week. Otherwise the trees would start to sprout and later die in the cold.

Ideally, the tree should stay in a pot on the balcony, said Grille. The high number of single-person households with little space in their homes is also increasing the trend towards small trees.

Preparations for sales have long since begun on the Christmas tree plantations. The Werderaner Tannenhof (Potsdam-Mittelmark district), for example, opened the season on Friday. There will be no price shock, it said.

Domestic Christmas trees are becoming more expensive

According to estimates by the Federal Association of Christmas Tree Growers, higher wages and increased transport costs are making domestic Christmas trees a little more expensive this year than last.

A Nordmann fir can therefore cost 21 to 29 euros per meter. Last year it was one euro less.
