Walk through the Natural Beauty Forest, save a seal, visit the TrouwBeurs, paint with wool, celebrate carnival or discover everything about windmills. This weekend there are plenty of activities to experience in Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland.
How Dutch is the windmill?
How Dutch is the windmill actually? With a lecture of the Groninger Landscape in the Reitdiep visitor center you will learn everything about the miller and the mill. Did you know that there are still about 1150 windmills in the Netherlands? These are many types, from sawmills to flour mills and polder mills…
Each mill has its own functions and all work on the mill is done by about 1500 volunteer millers. You can register for the lecture via the website of the Groningen Landscape.

Make a painting with wool
Making a painting with paint is complicated enough, but painting with sheep’s wool is of course even more challenging. At Teetún de Hollen in Ryptsjerk you will make a painting with colored and clarified sheep’s wool on Saturday. For this, the technique of dry and needle felting is used.
The wool is pricked onto the cotton with a felting needle, layer by layer, creating a wool painting. This is also called felt work. You can sign up for the workshop via [email protected] .
Save a seal with an endoscopy
During the spring break, work like a true seal doctor with an endoscope. Did you know that at the Seal Center in Pieterburen they sometimes have to remove a fish hook from the stomach of a seal? This is because they sometimes swallow a fish that is still attached to a hook. Hooks are very sharp and can do a lot of damage to the seal. So it is important to remove the hook as soon as possible.
Fortunately, the Seal Center knows exactly how to solve this, so that the seals can swim happily again. In this children’s activity you look into the seal with a small camera, an endoscope, to find the fish hook and save the seal. The activity can be booked daily during spring break.
Celebrating carnival in Sneek
Come and take a look at the Carnival caravan in Sneek. On Saturday at 2:11 pm, beautifully decorated wagons, playful running groups, Advendo and the Oertetters will be on watch from the cattle market. The carnival caravan continues the renewed route through the center, along the Stationsstraat, the Martiniplein, the Oud Kerkhof, the Oude Koemarkt, Hoogend, Grootzand, the Schaapmarktplein, the Nauwe and Wijde Burgstraat, the Gedempte Poorterzijlen, the Suupmarkt, the Leeuwenburg, the Waagplein , the Marktstraat, the Nauwe Noorderhorne and the Wijde Noorderhorne.
Subsequently, the award ceremony and the carnival party with DJ Baggel and the Oertetters will take place in the covenant.
The beauty of nature
The estates around Nienoord in Leek and Mensinghe in Roden are known by many for their beauty. However, around and in the Natuurschoonbos in Terheyl (Nietap) it is just as beautiful and there are various features of a former estate. During a walk led by Herman de Meijer and Laus Paagman of IVN Westerkwartier, you will see the various places that are important in the rich history of the area.
For example, what did the monastery in Aduard have to do with this region? And what can you discover about all nature, trees and plants? Registration for the walk, which starts at the parking lot on the Natuurschoonweg, is not necessary.
