In Finland, battery freezing is a big problem in slightly cooler weather.

Many people struggle with their smartphone’s battery when they constantly feel like they are running low on juice. In cold weather, such as winter, it is not at all unusual for the handset to suddenly pick up and turn off, even if there is still some battery left.
Mobile phone users share a lot of tips with each other on how to maintain the battery charge even a little longer, so that the phone’s charging doesn’t plow into the bottom right away.
Also Cnet tells an easy tip: changing just one setting can help.
When using a smartphone, you often have to jump from one application to another. Those applications that were open before do not turn off by themselves, but they stay in the background to haunt.
According to many users, turning off applications running in the background saves the phone’s power and improves its performance. Others, such as Apple and Google’s management, believe that background applications do not require so many resources from the handset that it would affect the operation of the mobile phone.
Either way, the big problem is that both Android phones and iPhones also refresh applications running in the background. Although sleeping applications themselves do not consume resources and battery, regular refreshing of applications does.
Disabling this setting will therefore significantly save the cell phone’s battery. In practice, it means that, for example, the weather information is not updated or new podcast episodes are not downloaded, unless the application is open.
However, it is important to distinguish that this is not the same as preventing the updating of applications from a version number to a newer one! It is important to update programs regularly, preferably automatically, as it increases the device’s information security.
Iphone: Change this setting
On the iPhone, you can find the setting about refreshing applications in the section:
Settings > General > Refresh apps in the background
Here you can turn off the background refreshing of applications completely or give permission only to certain applications.
You can also set the background refresh to only happen when the mobile phone is connected to Wi-Fi. A mobile data connection consumes more battery than a Wi-Fi connection.
Android: Change this setting
On Android, the corresponding switch is, slightly depending on the phone model, at:
Settings > Connections > Data usage > Data saving
On Android, however, it is possible to give individual applications a separate permission to refresh themselves, despite the general ban. This happens in:
Settings > Connections > Data usage
In some phones, the setting may also be found under:
Device maintenance > Battery > Background usage restrictions
