The exit Oudheusden/Heusden of the provincial road N267 has suddenly become ‘Exit Worstenbrood’. Under the official ANWB sign, baker Giel Vermeulen, winner of the Tastiest Brabantse Sausage Roll 2022, has hung a sign showing the way to his bakery: Bakkertje Deeg. “You can’t miss it: this is the exit to Brabant’s tastiest sausage bread.”
The sign looks very official, it looks like two drops of water on a real ANWB sign. It reads: ‘Winner of the tastiest Brabant sausage roll’, with a bold arrow in the direction of the bakery in Vesting Heusden. “You would almost think that we have applied for it at the municipality, but that is not the case,” confesses baker Giel.
“Even if the sign only hangs for one day, we consider it a success.”
“My mother ordered the sign online and when we unpacked it, we were also amazed that it looks so much like an official ANWB sign. Even if the sign only hangs for one day, we consider it a success.”
Even without the ‘worstenbrood exit’ along the N267, customers know where to find the winning sausage bread baker.
“At the end of March, we won the battle for the tastiest Brabant sausage roll and in the first weeks sales had even quadrupled. Now that we are almost three months later, we are still selling twice as much as in previous years. Really beautiful.”
A spokesperson for the municipality of Heusden initially has to laugh heartily at the ‘Worstbread exit.’
“We are still proud here that Bakkertje Deeg is the best sausage bread maker in Brabant, but is that plate allowed there? It is a provincial road and I do not know whether the municipality of Heusden also has authority there, I will find out.” A little later there is an answer. “The sign is along the Provincialeweg on the grounds of the province, if enforcement is required at all, then it is up to them.”
Giel van Bakkertje Deeg will be a proverbial sausage. “We are happy to have won and the sign is a joke, a fun promotion.”
