Sasu Salin has been named Susijeng’s new captain.
At club level, Salin, 31, who represents CB 1939 Canarias from Tenerife, follows in an honorary role Shawn Huffwhose national team career ended at the EC competitions played in Germany.
Before Huff’s seven-year stint in the national team, Hyöri was the head coach Hanno Möttölä.
– They have handled the task at that time with such honor that of course you want to handle it in the same way or maybe even better. I am taken by this, that I get to be the captain and I try to do my best to be able to help these young people myself, Salin thought at Monday’s press conference.
Finland is now captained by a man whose strength can be counted on humor that lightens the atmosphere. Salin said on Monday that the lessons learned from the captains of the national team and club teams have not been picked up by him along the way.
– You probably should have watched what they were doing, but I’ve usually been the one who disturbs them a bit and tries to do all the silly things. Let’s see if I got anything. Yes, I kind of know how that protocol works and we try to behave accordingly. So far, it seems that Susijeng doesn’t have the kind of hooligan that I used to be, so maybe that makes my role easier, Malmi’s trash collector mused.
The first match of Salini’s captaincy is the World Cup qualifier against Germany on November 11. Three days later, Finland meets Estonia.
Susijengi has already secured a place for next year’s World Championships in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.
