6th cup victory of the Styrians
SK Sturm Graz secured the cup victory: Graz won the final of the ÖFB Cup against record champions SK Rapid Vienna 2-0, attacker Manprit Sarkaria scored both goals. For the first time since 2018, the trophy will not go to Salzburg. The Austrian club, which has been dominant for years, failed in the quarter-finals against the current winner Sturm.
The final was characterized by missed chances for Graz: In the first half, both teams first had to acclimatize in the sold-out Wörthersee Stadium, and the early stages in particular were extremely hectic. The greatest chance of the goalless first 45 minutes came from Emanuel Emegha, whose header was just scraped off the line in the 20th minute. It was unclear whether the ball was behind the line, goal-line technology does not exist in Austria.
In the second half, the reigning runner-up Sturm Graz then had countless great chances, of which attacker Manprit Sarkaria was able to take advantage of two in minutes 64 and 85. Rapid Vienna, who had to do without the suspended defender Michael Sollbauer, proved to be extremely error-prone on the defensive, especially in the second half of the game, and were unable to defend many high balls from Graz.
After successes in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2010 and 2018, it is the sixth cup success for Graz in the 114-year history of the club. Final hero Sarkaria, meanwhile, became the competition’s top scorer with six goals.
