Armenia is a parliamentary republic in form, but not in content, ex-President Armen Sarkissian believes. He recalled that he proposed to create a system of checks and balances. Without it, no progress will be achieved, according to a message on the website of the former head of state.
In addition, Sargsyan expressed hope that constitutional changes will take place in Armenia, which will allow the president to act in a balanced and coordinated atmosphere.
Recall, on January 23, Armen Sarkis announced his retirement from the presidency of Armenia. In his opinion, now the head of state does not have the tools to influence the main processes in the country’s domestic and foreign policy.
According to the Armenian constitution, the election of a new president can take place no earlier than 25 days after the previous head of state leaves office.
The President is elected by the Parliament of the Republic for a term of 7 years. At least one quarter of the total number of deputies of the National Assembly can nominate their candidate.
