Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher has a street named after him in Sarajevo today, an initiative with which the city remembers the humanitarian aid provided by the pilot to the city after the Bosnian civil war (1992-1995).

The Sarajevo Canton Assembly today unanimously approved the initiative, launched last December in gratitude to the German champion for his activities and donations to care for Bosnian children who were disabled during the war and the siege that the city suffered.

The chosen street, called “Michael Schumacher Transversal”, is the place where Schumacher met with the minors of Sarajevo when, as a UNESCO ambassador, he visited the Bosnian capital in 1996 and 1997 to raise funds for a hospital specializing in children who were injured during the conflict.

On the same avenue, which connects the Sarajevite airport with the city center, there is a mural dedicated to the champion, who has the title of honorary citizen of Sarajevo.

Schumacher, 53, has been retired from public life since the skiing accident he suffered in December 2013.

His family maintains a rigorous silence regarding his state of health.
