The city center of Schagen will be filled with volunteers in traditional West Frisian clothing during the West Frisian Folklore this Thursday. And that includes a Miss, who is allowed on the carriage, waves to the spectators and is therefore really the center of attention. This year Sara van Dijk from De Gouwe can take care of this.
About a month ago, after a beauty pageant with thirteen other enthusiastic ladies, the West Frisian Sara van Dijk was told that she could become Miss West Frisian Folklore of 2023. It is therefore her honor to wave at the many spectators in front with a horse and carriage.
She does that, despite the fact that it sometimes still feels a bit awkward, with great pleasure. “Love the fact that you can honor the Dutch tradition a bit”, says the Miss.
Family tradition
It is not surprising that Sara participated in the beauty pageant, because her family has been participating in the pageants for years. But not only that, two of Sara’s family members preceded her as Miss. “My mother was also Miss and so was my sister”, Sara says proudly. That is very special to her and it is now almost becoming a family tradition.
In the video below you can see what Sara’s day as Miss Westfriese Folklore looks like (text continues below the video).
The coming Thursdays Sara can therefore be admired in the center of Schagen in a beautiful dress as Miss, but that is a bit different costume than what she wears at work. The West Frisian works at the Marechaussee. “That’s all a bit tougher, this is all a bit more feminine. Also nice sometimes,” laughs the Miss.
