Santiano member Peter Sage and his wife had to be rescued by a sea rescue cruiser around three kilometers from Kiel last Friday (March 24). They had to abandon their sailing yacht due to the sudden inrush of water and escaped into the dinghy before they were caught.

“The DGzRS saved our lives,” the musician is quoted as saying by the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked Persons (DGzRS). “The sea rescuers looked after us like picture-perfect and caring. They immediately noticed our condition and treated us very sensitively and understandingly,” says Sage gratefully. The twelve meter long sailing boat sank. When the helpers arrived, only the mast could be seen. “I realized with horror that the flooding could no longer be stopped,” explains the violinist of the shanty rock group. “My wife and I managed to climb into the dinghy. With a heavy heart we let go of our sailing ship and drifted away with the wind and current.”

The North German quintet Santiano is one of the most successful folk bands in the country. They are best known for their nautical motifs and sea shanties. Her debut album TO THE END OF THE WORLD sold over 1.3 million copies.
