“72 Seasons” will be released on April 14, 2023 – the eleventh Metallica album and the first since the release of “Hardwired… to Self-Destruct” seven years ago. To mark the occasion, Robert Trujillo sat down with journalist Steffan Chirazi to talk about the new album and upcoming tour. The interview was on Monday (March 27) published on the Metallica blog So What!. In it, the bassist revealed, among other things, that the song “You Must Burn” will be the first time he can be heard as a background singer on a Metallica track.

“When I joined Metallica, I had never sung in my entire life, so the fact that I can do backing vocals now is pretty cool,” said the 58-year-old. “For the first time in my life I get to sing on a Metallica record and James [Hetfield, Anm. d. Red.] support. I’m very proud of that. So we’re getting better and better. We’re still learning and growing in this band. The level of respect is much higher.” He added, “I was surprised when I got the call from Greg Fidelman [Metallica-Produzent, Anm. d. Red.] got because I really just wanted to play some bass, but then he said, ‘I want you to sing on some stuff too. And I thought, ‘Really?’ I got a little nervous.”

While this is actually the first time Trujillo has appeared on a Metallica studio recording, it’s worth noting that the bassist has contributed vocals to live performances before, including on the song “Spit Out The Bone” with James Hetfield and in 2018 on a tribute cover for Celtic Frost alongside Kirk Hammett.

Official ticket sales for single tickets to the Metallica tour, which begins in Amsterdam in April, have already started. The band will play two shows in each city, each with a different setlist.
