San Siro for the national team and concerts, with the 4th ring the Municipality hopes

With Milan at San Donato, Inter is also heading towards Rozzano, but Mayor Sala will still try to reach out to the Nerazzurri by counting on the works to expand the stadium

In place of the skull, in his hands, Giuseppe Sala holds the model of San Siro. He observes it doubtfully like Shakespeare’s Hamlet, asking himself similar questions and leveraging a recurring theme: the future of the stadium. One of the symbols of Italy’s football, the happy oasis of champions and legends, risks becoming a cathedral in the desert destined to host national team matches, some charity competitions and star concerts. The purchase of the San Donato land by Milan seems to close the door on the Rossoneri. The upper floors of Palazzo Marino took note of it without batting an eyelid, avoiding the concept of surprise. Translated: they expected it, although obviously the hope of being able to at least hold off Inter remains intact. Cardinale, meanwhile, overcame the optimism when he grabbed the pen to quickly outline Milan’s path. He circled the San Francesco area in San Donato and then started running with his head down after evaluating other areas near San Siro (La Maura).

Projects

Inter should go to the municipality of Rozzano, whose exclusivity on the area will expire at the end of April. Two seventy thousand seater facilities will be built equipped with every comfort: hotels, restaurants, museums, shops. The topic on the tables of the Milanese is traffic, as traffic-related interventions will have to be carried out in both areas. Paolo Scaroni, AC Milan president, however, hypothesized the inauguration of the Milan stadium for the 2028-29 season, with the first stone laid by the end of 2024. “We want to build the most beautiful facility in the world,” he said him puffing out his chest. It is likely that the time will extend to 2030. Milan’s project is entrusted to “Manica”, the Nerazzurri’s to “Populous”. Both studios are analyzing the details to give fans their dream home. Inter would also like to open the facility in 2028-29.

Futurability

San Siro resists. The constraint on the second ring protects him from being demolished, but it is clear that Sala, hopeful of a U-turn at least by the Nerazzurri, will still have to start thinking about a Meazza without the two queens of the ball. At the end of January, the renovation plan for the stadium drawn up by the Arco Associati studio was presented to the Municipality. The project manager is the architect Giulio Fenyves. We are talking about a simple proposal, that is, a preliminary study “for the conservation, revaluation and transformation into an Experience Stadium” of San Siro. A concrete attempt to try to get Inter and Milan on their side. Various curiosities are planned, such as the stadium lit up according to the colors of the home team or the changing of seats. The project also involves the construction of a fourth ring, located at the top of the current first ring. Sala expressed his point of view over and over again, especially during the presentation of the restyling, the cost of which would be around 300 million euros of work. “As mayor of Milan and the metropolitan city I would not do anything to oppose the hypothesis of new stadiums in different municipalities. But we can think about the fact that we must do everything to keep both clubs in Milan.” Right now the hope only concerns Inter, to whom Sala will not stop reaching out. The Nerazzurri leaders, however firm on Rozzano’s idea, observe the evolution of the scenario. The Municipality would be open to all solutions, as declared by Sala himself on 31 January: “The first hypothesis is that we carry out the works. The second is that we participate in the works in partnership with the teams. Finally, we can cede the surface rights to the stadium in the long term. In this case the amount that the clubs would have to pay would be limited.” The door remains open.
