San Lorenzo defeated Newell’s Old Boys 1-2 on Wednesday, which thus complicated their expectations of reaching the quarterfinals of the Argentine Professional Football League Cup. With goals from the youth players Agustín Martegani and Federico Gattoni, the irregular Ciclón, led by the interim Fernando Berón, beat a rival who discounted through Cristian Lema in a match on the thirteenth day.
San Lorenzo added just its third victory in thirteen presentations and accumulates 14 points. Newell’s Old Boys remain in third place with 23, although they will be at risk of falling out of the top four in Zone 1, which grants a direct ticket to the quarter-finals.
The day will continue this Friday with two matches, one of them between the leader of zone 2, Estudiantes de La Plata, against Aldosivi. Three games will be played on Saturday: Racing Club against Banfield and Sarmiento de Junín at home against River Plate in Zone 1. In Zone 2 Boca Juniors and Barracas Central will face off, as well as Vélez Sarsfield against Tigre. The penultimate day of the League will end on Monday with four games.
