Samsung Galaxy A03 at Aldi: Is the smartphone offer worth it?

Aldi is selling the Samsung Galaxy A03 at a bargain price from Thursday 28 July. The smartphone was presented in November 2021 and is now available from the discounter for 129 euros. But is it worth buying or are there better alternatives?

The Galaxy A03 from Samsung is a classic entry-level smartphone with slimmed down but sufficient features. Visually, it can convince with its current look, which is based on that of the Galaxy S21 models. Aldi only sells the Samsung Galaxy A03 in its northern branches. The Samsung Galaxy A03 came onto the market in autumn 2022 and has remained relatively constant in price since then. While it started for just under 160 euros back then, it has often been available for 129 euros in recent months. Aldi Nord is also currently calling for this price. However, the discounter’s offer includes the starter package from the in-house mobile phone brand Aldi Talk. This normally costs EUR 12.99 and includes a starting credit of EUR 10. However, any other tariff can also be used with the smartphone.

Aldi Talk is a prepaid provider that implements its service in the O2 network. The starter package costs 12.99 euros and comes with a credit of 10 euros. It allows various options to be booked on the SIM card. You can choose between pure internet flat rates, but also complete offers consisting of all-network and SMS flat rates from EUR 7.99 per 28 days. Without a booked option, connections to other Aldi-Talk customers cost 3 cents per minute and SMS and 11 cents to all other networks.

The Samsung Galaxy A03 is suitable for all those users who do not have such high demands on a smartphone. Although it has a large 6.5-inch display, Samsung uses the simpler IPS technology instead of an OLED screen and only an HD resolution. The display is therefore not quite as bright and rich in contrast.

After all, the Samsung Galaxy A03 comes with Android 11 ex works. This means that users have a very up-to-date operating system at their disposal. Another highlight is the battery, which offers a capacity of 5000 mAh and thus ensures a long running time. Samsung uses a model with two sensors for the camera. The 48-megapixel wide angle is supported by a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera is therefore not really competitive, especially since the second sensor only offers additional image information due to the low resolution, but otherwise only offers little added value. The front camera takes pictures with up to 5 megapixels.

As far as performance is concerned, the Galaxy A03 has the standard fare of the entry-level class. An octa-core processor with 1.6 GHz drives the smartphone along with 4 GB of RAM. Simple Android games, the occasional YouTube video, and surfing and messaging are no problem. However, more demanding users should choose a different model. At least the 64 GB of storage is decent. If desired, it can also be expanded using a micro SD card.

The connection options are positive. On the one hand, the Samsung Galaxy A03 supports WLAN AC, which is not a matter of course in this price range, and on the other hand, there is Bluetooth version 5. Users do not have to do without a fingerprint sensor either, which is positioned on the side in this case.

Is it worth buying the Samsung Galaxy A03 from Aldi?

In principle, the Galaxy A03 is a solid smartphone. Performance is good for the price range; there is an up-to-date Android system and a long-lasting battery. The performance and memory equipment are also okay. However, there are limitations with the not quite as radiant display and the camera. Anyone who can put up with that will find a good smartphone at a low price in the Samsung Galaxy A03. At 129 euros, Aldi is currently making the best offer, even if the device is available at this price from time to time. Other providers currently charge around 139 euros and more.
