Same bonuses for footballers – official Raml: “First do your homework”

Silke Raml represents the DFB in the UEFA Committee for Women’s Football (IMAGO/FAF)

“You can’t compare America with Germany,” says Silke Raml about the new regulation in US soccer, according to which national players receive the same pay. “In my opinion, we would be badly advised in Germany if we pushed the DFB in front of us and demanded equal pay for the soccer players.” In the USA there would be a different starting point, says Raml. There, the women’s team generates more income than the men. In Germany it looks very different.

That’s why Raml’s timetable is: First, do your homework in German women’s football and improve the structures and visibility. Equal pay for women and men could then possibly be discussed again in a few years. “The DFB is on it,” says Raml. However, it still takes time to bring women’s football to a higher level.

It’s still difficult for Raml to say what she wants to achieve in her new position at UEFA, because she first has to familiarize herself with the structures. In principle, however, she would also like to bring women’s football forward in Europe: “You could just as well say that UEFA should be prepared to put the same money or the same bonuses into the women’s competitions as into the men’s competitions.”
