Wheelchair tennis player Sam Schröder from Geleen is the new number one in the world ranking in wheelchair tennis.
The International Tennis Federation has announced this. “It is bizarre that I have achieved this goal. I have no words for it,” writes Schröder on Instagram.
Got a lot of points
The 22-year-old Schröder collected many points, partly due to his win at the Australian Open. With 3862 points, he is now the world leader. At number two is his doubles partner Niels Vink with 3676 points. The Englishman Andrew Lapthorne follows at some distance with 2459 points.

Successor of Alcott
Australian Dylan Alcott can no longer be found in the list. The seven-time winner of the Australian Open has retired from tennis. In his last match, the final of the Australian Open, he lost to Schröder.
Roland Garros and Wimbledon
Schröder, who has already won the US Open in the past, will prepare for the Roland Garros and Wimbledon tournaments in the coming period. In his training sessions, led by Joop Brouns, he will focus on the specific surfaces in Paris and London. For wheelchair tennis players, the clay (Roland Garros) and grass (Wimbledon) surface is different from hard courts, not only in terms of feel for the ball, but also in terms of resistance when moving.
