Sam Meijer crowns excellent second half of DOS’46 in Nijeveen

DOS’46 surprised again in the Korfball League a week after the victory at Fortuna, by stealing a point from DVO: 27-27.

Sports hall De Eendracht in the Drenthe korfball village was once again turned upside down in an old-fashioned way on Saturday. For a long time, DOS’46/VDK Group seemed to have little to gain against DVO, last season’s losing indoor finalist. Moreover, the Bennekommers took revenge for that defeat a week before the away match against DOS’46 by beating national champion PKC 27-24.

DVO was also the parent party in Nijeveen for a long time. The halftime score was 10-14 and DOS’46 could not even be dissatisfied with that. Gertjan Meerkerk not only shot sharply (five goals), but also stopped Christian Dekkers from scoring. The other players of DOS’46 could not compensate for the loss of Dekkers’ usual production.

Successful substitutions

Yet the turnaround came in the second half, partly due to a number of successful substitutions by the coaching duo Henk Jan Mulder/Friso Boode, which improved the home team’s play. DVO kept control on the scoreboard for a long time, but DOS’46 started to believe in a good result again. This was topped off a minute before the end by Sam Meijer. The substitute scored from afar to make it 27-27.

It was striking that no fewer than 16 of the 27 Drenthe goals came from women, especially bearing in mind that the women of PKC (almost all international) only scored three times against DVO.

Boode was happy with the point and DOS’46’s comeback afterwards. “A point won. Not only thanks to the starting eight, but also due to the impulses from the side.” After four matches, DOS’46 is still undefeated, but Boode remains realistic and cautious. “We want to be a challenger for the teams that see themselves at the top. And this hall must become an impregnable hurdle.”
