Sam Hagens went to the hairdresser after very fierce criticism of his straight hair, but his critic is not yet satisfied. “It used to be a 3 and now it is at most a 6. It has to be better.”
For a young lad in his early thirties, Sam Hagens, one of the stars of Today Inside, pays relatively little attention to his haircut. It is often quite squashed on his head and that causes annoyance for Mari van de V…. Uhh, Victor Vlam. The media critic finds it disturbing that someone who appears so often on TV looks like this.
Worst haircut
Victor expressed strong criticism of Sam about a week ago. “He has the worst haircut in all of Hilversum. That’s a drama. (…) What makes a good presenter? That’s someone who is fun to watch, fun to listen to. That’s why it helps to make sure you have a good haircut,” he says in the podcast The Communicados.
A good haircut is half the battle, Victor knows. “If you think of Jeroen Pauw, Tom Egbers and Matthijs van Nieuwkerk and you think of their hair, you can actually say in all three cases: they have a fantastic haircut. You may find it less attractive, that is possible, but it is a hairstyle that is an expression of their character, right?
Thin hair
What’s Sam’s problem? “He has thin hair. If you have thin hair, it often helps to have a slightly shorter haircut so that it falls less flat on your head. That’s actually the biggest problem. So a shorter haircut, that can make it rise a little more. And if you want to give it some extra volume, you have to blow-dry it.”
It seems like there is no one to explain that to Sam, says a surprised Victor. “And before you blow-dry it, you should also put some mousse through it first. That really seems to help.”
To the hairdresser
Sam went to the hairdresser last week, a day after Victor made the above strong criticism. He himself claims that it is a coincidence, but of course there is no such thing as a coincidence. “Sam indeed ran to the hairdresser and gave himself a new haircut. I have to be honest and tell you that I am quite enthusiastic about it,” Victor responds.
He continues: “My criticism was that it fell very flat on his head. It was a very flat haircut. There was little volume. That may be due to his thin hair, but then you have to blow-dry it a bit. This week he went to the hairdresser. It is indeed shorter, also a suggestion I made.”
More volume
You notice that Sam takes constructive criticism really well, Victor compliments. “I can also see that he is really making an effort to get a little more lift, a little more volume. So there is a little more product in it which makes it stand up a little more.”
He concludes: “If I had to give it a grade now, I would say a 3 at the time. I now give it a passing grade. I give it a 6. I also think that indicates that there are still opportunities for improvement. But of course you have to motivate small steps in the right direction. So in that respect I give him a passing grade for now.”
