Saltburn: the role of fashion in the film with Jacob Elordi

DIt’s difficult to watch it all in one go but even more difficult to change the channel. Saltburn is the film of the moment that everyone talks about, also thanks to its costumes. A psychological thriller signed by director Emerald Fennell, set in England in 2007, starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi as two Oxford students who decide to spend the summer at Felix’s (Elordi) family home, called Saltburn.

How to dress in January 2024: 5 looks to copy

University scenes where the dress code is inspired by photographs of drunken evenings posted on Facebook in 2007 alternate with outfit with luxurious elegance signed by the popular Maisons of the time. Take care by the same Bridgerton costume designerSophie Canale, it is precisely the characters’ looks that reveal their dark and intriguing sides.

Fashion in Saltburn brings the (real) 2000s back to life

The importance of clothes is made clear from the first minutes, when the outsider Quick is teased for his jacket that is too stiff and formal. In a decadent and unbalanced world like the one in Saltburn, being well dressed seems to be the only rule that everyone respects. Tie dinners, costume parties, but also vintage Miu Miu sneakers for high-alcohol tennis matches and cascades of Chanel bracelets. Inspired by 2007 style icons like Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss, the women of Saltburn show off long dresses designed by the Maison while always maintaining a rebellious appearance. Within the confines of the country estate that gives the film its title, fashion is the means through which the Catton family affirms their status quo.

The stage wardrobe in detail

Although they are not real period costumes (like those in Bridgerton), Sophie Canale approached the stage wardrobe in the same way. Too recent to be considered vintage, but old enough to require very detailed study and research, sourcing costumes for Saltburn was a real challenge. The solution? It takes inspiration from old Facebook posts dated 2007 and searches for clothes in the wardrobes of those who spent those years in college and clubs.

From E-Bay to Depopto vintage shops and personal archives: items from the first collection of Kate Moss for Topshop (2010), by Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister And Jack Wills, for the scenes in Oxford. While for the more elegant moments in Saltburn, looks from the catwalks of the era were chosen Christopher Kane, Valentine, Chanel, Dior, Chloé, Agent Provocateur and Jenny Packham. The result is a wild sensorial journey, achieved above all thanks to the strong contrasts of the outfits.

The looks that are already setting trends

Among the designer looks of note and ready to be copied this spring, rest assured Saltburn will contribute to the return of the 2010 trendsthose make room relaxed and almost bohemian Of Elspeth aka Rosamund Pike. As a model, her wardrobe is a mix of items from different eras, which reflects the criticality of the character. Vintage dresses by Alexander McQueen they alternate with bootcut jeans and haute couture jackets, with color combinations such as mint green and red (of a silk dress and Valentino bolero) ready to conquer the trends.

The Agent Provocateur leopard print bodysuit worn by Venice it’s the unusual piece that could reawaken dormant styles. While the sequined dresses (really 2000s) by Pamela designed by Christopher Kane promise a glittering return to glamorous disco clothing.

Final bonus track: le Ralph Lauren polo by Jacob Elordi. To be stolen from his wardrobe and shown off as if you were traveling through time, with a high collar and combined with jeans and canvas tennis shoes.
