‘Sales via the internet have grown rapidly to more than €30 billion’ | Money

A total of 373 million purchases were made via the internet, representing an increase of 13%. This involved €30.6 billion, which is 16% more than a year earlier. The amount that a consumer spends online has also increased. That used to be €1900 per person, but last year it came to €2180.

“Consumers are therefore getting used to spending more and more money online,” notes Thuiswinkel.org director Marlene ten Ham. She points out in a statement that the online purchases of products and services did show different movements. “During the lockdowns, we see increases in product purchases, during the easing, in the purchases of services.”

Travel and shopping

Looking at the type of sales, the strongest growth was seen in the purchase of package holidays, airline tickets and hotels. It is likely that this category mainly recovered from 2020, the year in which the travel sector worldwide came under strong pressure. The popularity of online shopping has also increased. It also emerges that by far the majority of purchases are settled with iDEAL.

The online store industry expects the online spending of Dutch people to continue to increase this year. But such strong growth figures as last year are not obvious, according to Ten Ham. She thinks the growth rate will return to the pre-corona pandemic shape.
