Sales in the German retail sector are falling significantly

Sales in German retail plummeted in April. Adjusted for seasonal and price effects (real), revenues fell by 5.4 percent compared to March, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office on Wednesday. The nominal decrease was 4.7 percent.

Compared to the same month last year, which was characterized by the lockdown, shops and online retailers had 6.2 percent more cash registers. The strong price increases for many goods are noticeable here. Without this effect, real sales fell by 0.4 percent year-on-year.

Sales in food retailing have fallen the most, with a real minus of 7.7 percent compared to March. Trade in non-food items shrank by 4.4 percent in real terms. Although online retailers achieved an increase of 5.4 percent compared to March, they lost almost a tenth (-9.6 percent) compared to the same month of the previous year, which was characterized by corona.
