Borussia Dortmund have once again done their best and tied down the next important player for the long term: Gregor Kobel! The keeper is extending his contract with the black and yellow early, as BVB announced on Thursday afternoon. With his extension, Kobel will probably become one of the top earners.
Since his move in the summer of 2021, Gregor Kobel has been one of the top performers at Borussia Dortmund. The goalkeeper, who came from VfB Stuttgart for 15 million euros, can be relied upon. So it’s no wonder that BVB has been trying for a long time to retain the keeper, who is also coveted by other clubs, for the long term. Now the extension has taken place, the working paper, which was dated until 2026, has been turned out until 2028, as BVB announced.
“Gregor Kobel’s sporting development in recent years has deeply impressed us all. His signing of this long-term contract is a great commitment to BVB,” said club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke. Sports director Sebastian Kehl added: “Gregor has developed into a world-class goalkeeper in Dortmund who has aroused the interest of many top clubs in Europe. We are proud that we were able to inspire him for a future at BVB despite all his options .”
As “Sky” and “Bild” have learned, Kobel will probably sweeten the extension with a hefty salary increase. So far, the Swiss is said to have earned “only” 3.5 million euros a year.
Kobel: I’m not finished at BVB yet!
Now Kobel is becoming one of the top earners in the club, apparently earning around ten million euros from now on, almost tripling his salary. Only Niklas Süle, who received eleven million euros, earns more.
“I’m a totally emotional guy, Dortmund is an incredibly emotional football location and the Signal Iduna Park is an incredibly emotional stadium. I think we fit together really well,” said Kobel, happy about his signature.
The goalkeeper added: Furthermore, I have the feeling: I’m just not finished here yet! After what we all experienced in Dortmund at the end of last season, I have to say: This team has the potential to win titles.” He would like to help with this, said the 25-year-old.
As “Bild” goes on to say, numerous interested parties are said to have been after Kobel. Among other things, financially strong Chelsea FC wanted to bring the 25-year-old into the Premier League. The Swiss national goalkeeper could have earned 20 million euros a year there. But Kobel stayed in Dortmund, where he is deputy captain.
The goalkeeper is currently in the middle of his third season at BVB. In 84 games he conceded a total of 107 goals across all competitions. He kept a clean sheet 29 times.
