Young & Akanji fly off the pitch
Liverpool FC won the derby against Everton FC and temporarily took over the lead in the table on Saturday. However, Manchester City moved past the Reds again that evening with a difficult win against Brighton.
Liverpool won 2-0 (0-0) against their local rivals after being in the majority for more than half. Mohamed Salah scored the goals in the 75th minute with a hand penalty and after a counterattack in stoppage time (90th + 7). It was the Egyptian’s second brace in a row. Manchester City won 2-1 (2-0) against the “Seagulls”. After taking the lead with Julián Álvarez’s fourth goal of the season, Erling Haaland scored his ninth goal. Ansu Fati brought Brighton close again in the 73rd minute. In stoppage time, Manuel Akanji was sent off with a yellow-red card.
In the Liverpool Merseyside derby, both teams started with a lot of momentum before Liverpool increasingly took control. But the hosts were rarely really dangerous. In the 37th minute, Everton weakened itself: Ashley Young, who had already received a yellow card after 18 minutes for his tough tackle on Luis Díaz, was sent off with a yellow-red card after another foul on Díaz. Despite the majority situation, Liverpool struggled until Michael Keane made a handball and Salah converted the penalty. In the final stages, Everton increased the pressure, but a Liverpool counterattack by Darwin Núñez and Salah brought the decision.
Coach Jürgen Klopp’s team celebrated another success after two games without a win. The ousted previous league leaders Tottenham Hotspur only play against Fulham FC on Monday evening. Arsenal FC could overtake Man City and Liverpool with a win at Chelsea FC on Saturday evening.
