Sailors Maxime Jonker and Marit Bouwmeester rise to the top at the World Championships | Other sports

The Dutch sailors Maxime Jonker and Marit Bouwmeester reported themselves at the top of the rankings in Argentina on the third day of the World Championships in the Ilca 6 class. Jonker is fourth in the joint standings and Bouwmeester takes eighth position.

Due to the large number of participants, the sailors in Mar del Plata are divided into two groups. Bouwmeester took first place in her first race of the day. Jonker finished third in her group. The planned second race was canceled due to a threat of thunder.

The other Dutch participants, Mirthe Akkerman and Roos Wind, are 20th and 42nd respectively. The Danish Anne-Marie Rindom is in the lead.

Olympic qualification is at stake for the Dutch sailors at the World Championships. There is only one Ilca 6 class ticket available for the Paris Games. Four-time world champion Bouwmeester won silver, gold and bronze successively during the last three Olympic Games. The World Cup lasts until January 10.

“We really have a super strong Dutch team in Mer del Plata. They had a difficult start to the event, but that’s what sailing can be like,” says national coach Arnoud Hummel. “I am sure that whoever wins this selection will definitely be a medal candidate at the Olympic Games and can also end up on the podium of a World Cup.”
