The name of the Pieperrace is derived from the potato sailors in the Hunger Winter during the Second World War, Hein Molenaar explains. The chairman of Stichting Pieperrace tells the story, which has been told many times, with love again.
“The Volendammers went to pick up potatoes from Friesland on the Botters (ships, ed.) They were brought to the hospitals in Amsterdam. That journey was lurking with ice and frost under terrible conditions. But they also had to avoid the bombs. Very admirable that those people did.”
