Sahara sand sets the sky above Brabant on fire

The combination of Sahara sand and a setting sun provided beautiful images on Wednesday evening. Across the province, the sky turned orange against a dark background.

The beautiful play of colors in the sky is the result of the sand and dust that has come our way from the Sahara. “It all starts with bad weather near the desert,” says Johhny Willemsen of Weerplaza. “When the wind blows very hard, the lightest dust and sand is blown into the air. It is thrown to great heights.”

The heaviest parts, the sand for example, will fall from the sky first. That happens in Spain and Portugal, for example. “What comes down here is a bit of dust that remains. That makes the sky beautifully colored.”
