Sagging cabins, uneven beaches, Bredene uses excavators

Large dunes of blown sand have appeared on the beaches and some beach cabins are completely askew. Erwin Feys, Alderman Public Works Bredene: “That is very bad. That is starting all over again if there is no damage to your cabin. That’s nature. We can’t do much about it. Hopefully the wind will lessen a bit now. Those cabins must be level. Otherwise the doors will not open. All you can do is carefully tear down and rebuild.”

First dig, then enjoy

It is the wind that blows away the sand under the cabins and those who did not control it now have a lot of problems. Some people came every day to protect their cabin. Elie Gies, beachgoer: “Mine is fine. We were informed and we came almost every three days to shovel sand. You have to replenish the blown away sand. As you can see, some cabins are almost completely buried.”

Bredene is now trying to mitigate the beach distress by using machines to level the beach. It costs a little extra money, but keeping the beaches nice and easily accessible is a core task for the seaside resort. A lot of people are expected this weekend, although many will have to dig before the enjoyment really starts.
