Safari has more than a billion users (but remains far from Chrome)

Apple’s browser, Safari, has more than 1 billion users according to a calculation by Atlas VPN published on May 31. A great performance, but not enough to tickle the industry champion, Google’s browser, Chrome and its 3.4 billion users.

The ranking will not surprise anyone. The GlobalStats site ranks browsers monthly according to their market share. Chrome is at 64.91% market share, Safari is at 19.03%, much further Microsoft’s Edge closes the podium with 3.99% share.

To turn these stats into user counts, Atlas VPN simply used numbers from Internet World Stats. This allowed him to determine that Safari has precisely 1,006,232,879 regulars. A figure that seems stable according to data from GlobalStats.

The success of Safari would be above all that of the iPhone and iPad and their iOS operating system. The browser is installed by default on Apple devices, a clear advantage over its competitors. Switching browsers only became possible in 2020.

It should be remembered, however, that Safari is not available on Android, the most popular mobile operating system in the world. Moreover, as recalled Ars-TechnicaApple abandoned development of its Safari version for Windows in 2010.

Moving down the rankings, Microsoft’s Edge also got a boost to overtake fourth-placed Firefox. Since Windows 11 it is the default browser of the operating system. This would have allowed it, with its 213 million users, to overtake Firefox in 2021, at 179 million users.

After having “defeated” Internet Explorer, almost extinct, the domination of Chrome seems unchallenged. The milestone that Safari would have crossed remains highly symbolic. Ars-Technica notes, moreover, that Microsoft’s browser, Edge, was built from Chromium. Google can sleep soundly.
