Sadness for Ona & Maud: touching place of mourning in Ruddervoorde

Dozens of people left a message: a candle, a drawing or a photo. Their father will appear before the council chamber in Bruges this morning. He is suspected of double infanticide.

These are gripping messages that you can read at the mourning spot on Hofplein in Ruddervoorde. The municipality has set up a mourning place for the murdered sisters. Lots of personal messages as a reminder of the two sisters, but also hugs, drawings and flowers. Immense sadness and especially the question: why did this have to happen?

The mourning place is set up on the Hofplein at the church in Ruddervoorde. Friday, November 25, the two girls will be said goodbye.

Father arrested

The murder of the two girls sparks outrage in the local community. The sisters’ father has been arrested. He is suspected of double infanticide. He was going through a divorce and was having a hard time with the proposed visitation schedule for the children. He feared that he would see his daughters less often. Their lifeless bodies were discovered on a farm in Waardamme last Thursday. They were suffocated.

The father will appear before the council chamber in Bruges this morning. He decides on his further detention.
