Sad news: young stork in nest at Dijklander Hospital in Purmerend passed away

We have bad news for those who enjoyed the three youngsters in stork’s nest on the roof of the Dijklander Hospital in Purmerend last week. One of the three chicks didn’t make it. Media partner Regio Purmerend reports this this afternoon.

Of the two stork young that are left in the nest, one looks a bit weaker. The question is whether it will survive. For the other, larger young, the prospects seem good. According to Regio Purmerend, this youngster looks energetic.

Competition

For the first two to three weeks, storks’ diet consists mostly of earthworms and sometimes insects. This is vomited into the nest, after which the young have to grab and swallow it themselves.

The stronger youngsters often get more food, so that a weaker youngster can weaken and die due to a lack of food. Whether this is also the case in the nest at Dijklander Hospital is not entirely certain.
