Ryan Gravenberch confirms displeasure at Bayern Munich

Hardly any playtime

FC Bayern paid 18.5 million euros for Ryan Gravenberch’s services last summer. The record of the 20-year-old Dutchman reads sobering at first glance: in 19 Bundesliga appearances, the midfielder was only once in the record champions’ starting XI, only three of his appearances lasted longer than 30 minutes, none longer than 45. Gravenberch, the linked to a potential move to the Premier League, reiterated in an interview with “Voetbal International“ his displeasure with his current situation.

And this for the umpteenth time in the past few weeks. The Dutch national player, whose market value has fallen by 5 million euros since moving from Ajax Amsterdam to Säbener Straße, had already announced in his home country at the beginning of April that he could imagine a premature change despite the contract running until 2027 – should nothing fundamentally happen change his playing time. FCB coach Thomas Tuchel has made a right-footed substitution in every Bundesliga game since taking office in the last quarter of an hour, but Gravenberch did not play in the DFB Cup against Freiburg and in both top-flight matches against Manchester City. Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United have reportedly already held talks with the player’s management to explore the terms of a potential move. Gravenberch is represented by Team Raiola.

A major upheaval is imminent for the Reds in the summer, not least the position in central midfield is one of the construction sites of the English champions of 2020. Gravenberch is considered a cheap option compared to other candidates such as Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham. In Manchester he could meet his old coach from Amsterdam, Erik ten Hag, under whose aegis Gravenberch once developed into a professional with international format in 103 games (12 goals, 13 assists). It is not unlikely that FC Bayern could even sell the Ajax homegrown talent for a profit after just one year. Whether the midfielder, despite the competitive situation in Munich, but with a view to the current crisis at Bayern, could get the prospect of more playing time in the short term is also not entirely impossible.

FC Bayern’s Ryan Gravenberch: “That has to change next season”

“In the beginning, of course, I had to get used to everything here. A new environment. Everything goes so much faster, sometimes training sessions just felt like competitions. It’s the top of Europe,” Gravenberch looked back at his early days with Munich, but then gave a nod to Tuchel and Co.: “But I have the feeling that I haven’t had to get used to it for a long time.”

“A year of training and playing at the highest level is nice and instructive. Although I also play, it’s mainly training. That has to change next season, then I really want to play weekly again,” Gravenberch said, explaining his claim and adding. “I haven’t spoken to the club’s management yet, so I’ll wait and see what happens. It is clear that this role does not correspond to my ideas.”
