The reason is that 48-year-old Giggs is due to appear in court this summer, on August 8. He is charged with assaulting both his then-girlfriend Kate Greville and her younger sister Emma. He is also said to have influenced his girlfriend’s life with “controlling and coercive behavior” for a period of more than three years. Giggs denies all allegations.
In a statement, Giggs responds briefly to his departure. “It was an honor to be the Wales national team coach. However, given the circumstances, I have to leave now. The current coach, the players, everyone has deserved to prepare as best as possible for the World Cup. It’s going to be difficult for me.”
Since November 2020, Giggs has been replaced by Robert Page at Wales and he remains responsible for the time being. He recently led the British to their first World Cup in 64 years. Page then lost twice against the Dutch national team: 1-2 in Cardiff and 3-2 in Rotterdam.
