Rot-Weiss Essen has probably finally moved out of the relegation zone of the third division. A lackluster but enormously important 2-0 (0-0) home win against table neighbor SpVg Bayreuth.

The goals for the red and white scored defender Felix Herzenbruch (62nd) and midfielder Björn Rother (68th). RWE has thus improved in the table and is now eight points ahead of the relegation zone.

After winning the Lower Rhine Cup during the week (1-0 against Wuppertaler SV), RWE went into the league game against the newly promoted side with confidence. After all, they had recently achieved good results in everyday business with the 2-0 win against BVB II and the 1-1 win against Ingolstadt.

Cautious start by both teams

However – and thus the Essen team mirrored the opponent’s tactics in the initial phase – the Dabrovskki protégés initially took a level-headed and, above all, very cautious approach. RWE cautiously played forward from a stronger defense – Bayreuth did the same. It’s clear how something like this ends: The fans hardly saw any goal scenes.

In the first half there was actually only one scene worth mentioning, and that happened in the 12th minute: Bayreuth’s Agyemang Diawusie quickly prevailed on the right wing. He set Benedikt Kirsch in the right half of the penalty area perfectly, who failed with his shot from ten meters at RW keeper Jakob Golz.

Harenbrock has the leadership on the foot, heartbreak hits

Only a few seconds had been played in the second half when the fans on Hafenstraße already had the goal scream on their lips. Essen’s Isaiah Young had prevailed against Felix Weber on the left wing. From the baseline, he puts it back on Cedric Harenbrock, whose shot from eleven yards flew just wide of the right post.

After an hour of play, coach Dabrowski brought in two new strikers in Oguzhan Kefkir and Ron Berlinski – now it was time to go on the offensive. It paid off straight away: in the 62nd minute, Kefkir, who had just come on, hit a free-kick cross halfway up into the Bayreuth penalty area. And it was defender Felix Herzenbruch who prevailed in the center and extended the ball into the Bayreuth goal – 1:0.

Rother makes the decision

In the 68th minute, the preliminary decision in this game: Björn Rother played a bad pass in midfield, but immediately got the ball back. He then let off a tight low shot from 27 meters, which hit the right corner of the goal perfectly to make it 2-0.

The game was decided and RWE initially pulled away from the bottom of the table. Next up for the Essen team next Saturday is the away game in Aue.
