The apologies are not only addressed to all veterans who “behaved like a good soldier” and who have since struggled with physical complaints. He also apologizes to second and third generations who grew up with the pain and sorrow of their parents and grandparents. “We will not take away the pain. This difficult period in history remains unfinished. That is why we must continue to talk, listen and commemorate.”
