Prime Minister Mark Rutte is in favor of an independent mediator who can restart the conversation between the cabinet and the farmers. He will make a proposal about this to the House of Representatives within a week, Rutte said during a debate about the farmers’ protests against the nitrogen plans.
Several groups had insisted on some form of mediation, such as CDA, VVD, CU and BBB. Rutte does not want to talk to the rioters, but does want to talk to the other farmers. He also said he did not want to alter the objectives of the plans.
The plan for a crisis committee comes from former agriculture minister Cees Veerman in the Volkskrant on Wednesday.
