Rutger Castricum almost eaten by two wolves: ‘I was alone’

It may be called a miracle that Rutger Castricum sat at the table at Today Inside last night. He was almost eaten by two wolves last weekend. “I ran fast.”

Rutger Castricum, the newest regular guest of Today Inside, has had a horror weekend. The presenter came face to face with two wolves at an unexpected moment, without other people around him. He feared for his life and started running fast.

Rutger on the Veluwe

How did it go exactly? “I was at the Veluwe for the weekend and I went for a run and then suddenly I was face to face with two wolves. Really,” he says Inside today.

The fear Rutger felt was unprecedented. “I had doubts about continuing to walk, but I really turned the other way. Yes, I didn’t dare. They just passed by. There were two. With such legs. I thought: I dare not. I was alone and there was no one there at all.”

‘Don’t be a sheep’

Wolves don’t normally attack humans, do they? “No, that’s what a friend of mine said: ‘You’re not a sheep, are you?’ That in itself is true. I walk a bit like that. haha.”

Johan Derksen: “They do become dangerous in a pack.”

Rutger: “There were two of them, so… I saw all those grids and then the wolves have nowhere to go. If they can’t get food then, they’ll grab what they can get and then I’ll walk there.”

Didn’t stay calm

The advice is to stay calm if you encounter a wolf, but Rutger failed to do that. “I really bounced back.”
