The Russian soldiers who allegedly executed two Ukrainian soldiers after they surrendered have been eliminated. The ‘Kyiv Post’ reports this with reference to a military spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (UAF).

“I can confirm that the group of Russian occupiers that committed this war crime has ceased to exist during further military actions,” Oleksandr Shtupun of the Tavria forces said on radio station Yedyni novyny. He did not specify where the suspected Russian soldiers were killed or how they were identified.

Surrender

A video posted to Telegram over the weekend showed two Ukrainian soldiers being shot at by Russian invaders shortly after surrendering. Then the video stopped abruptly. According to the Ukrainian Telegram channel DeepState, which published the video, at Stepove, near the hotly contested town of Avdiivka in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk, the Russians encountered a trench of Ukrainian defenders who had run out of ammunition and surrendered. But when the second soldier left the trench, both were shot.

Captured

The court of the Donetsk region started an investigation following the images. Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, labeled the execution video a violation of the Geneva Conventions and a war crime. Lubinets said the Ukrainian soldiers “were disarmed, had their arms up and did not pose any threat.” The Russian soldiers should have captured them according to the rules and given them the status of prisoners of war.
