Russian threat ignored for too long

In Cafe Europe journalist Annette van Soest and professor of European History and European Integration Mathieu Segers talk to experts about European political dilemmas. Segers responded to the war in Ukraine last week with an engaging speech. He spoke of the Russian threat that, when addressed in the European Union, was often written off as paranoia from Eastern European countries that were yet to get used to “the new history” in which peace and openness are central and a relationship with Russia seemed possible. “And that is a cause for shame,” said Segers. An interesting conversation about how Europe can still correct this error of judgment follows. This episode is therefore a wonderful addition to the discussion that is now alive everywhere.
