Russian soldiers destroyed Ukrainian school, but at the same time left anti-war messages: “Ukrainians and Russians are one people, we want peace”

When Ukrainian forces recaptured Katyuzhanka, a village north of Kiev, in early March, they found the local school completely destroyed. Most of the school supplies had been stolen and everything the Russians hadn’t taken, they had destroyed. The playground had been converted into a makeshift cemetery and the football field contained deep trenches. In the classrooms, messages were written on the chalkboards, signed by “the Russians”. “Live in peace, take care of yourself” and “Ukrainians and Russians are one people”, it read, among other things.
