The president of the United States, Joe Biden, will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, next week in San Francisco with the aim of “stabilizing” the relationship between both countries, as confirmed by two White House officials.
The meeting, which will take place on Wednesday, November 15 on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), marks the first meeting between both leaders on American soil and the second since Biden came to power in 2021.
“We are in competition with China, but we are not seeking conflict, confrontation or a new Cold War,” stressed one of the officials, who asked not to be identified, in a call with journalists.
Biden is expected to discuss with Xi the future of the relationship between the two countries, emphasizing “keeping open” the lines of communication and expanding them into other areas in addition to diplomacy, such as military and intelligence, according to officials. .
In addition, they assured that the leaders will address issues of the Asia-Pacific region, the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Israel and the Gaza Strip, as well as more general issues such as climate change and the fight against narcotics.
