Russia resumes gas supply to Germany through Nord Stream I

Russia resumed gas supply to Germany via the German-Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline on Thursday. This is reported by international news agencies. The gas pipeline has been closed for the past ten days for its usual annual maintenance, but it was uncertain whether gas would flow through the pipeline again: state gas company Gazprom wrote to European customers earlier that it could not guarantee that deliveries could be resumed after the works . It invoked “exceptional” circumstances.

The European Commission therefore feared that Russia would definitively stop gas supplies through the Nord Stream I after the maintenance. European Commissioner Johannes Hahn said this week that the Commission even assumed that the gas supply will not be resumed anymore.

Gazprom already cut gas supplies to Germany by 60 percent in June. It is not clear whether the resumed deliveries will be at the same level as for maintenance. At that time it was about 67 million cubic meters per day, about 40 percent of the maximum capacity of Nord Stream I.
